Preface

How this website came to be

This website is a requirement for my CD 315 class. I started to create this website in August 2005 when I had to choose a topic for my Multigenre Research Project (MRP).  This was very challenging for me because I was interested in a variety of topics such as Parkinson's Disease, hearing impairments, and brain injuries. I wanted to choose Parkinson's Disease because my aunt was diagnosed with this disease a couple of years ago.  I also wanted to choose cochlear implants because I am going into Audiology.  I decided not to pick either of these because I learned a great deal about them from completing other assignments in previous classes and reading about them on my spare time. Therefore, I realized that I should choose a topic that I was not very familiar with.  That was when I decided that my MRP should be about brain injuries.  This neurological impairment was introduced to me last semester in my CD 430, Neurology, class.  I also fell in love with a book that I read about brain injuries.  The book is "Being with Rachel" by Karen Brennan.  Brennan explains how her daughter's life and her life changed after Rachel was in a motorcycle accident. If you ever have a chance, I highly suggest that you get your hands on this book. Rachel's story really inspired me to select closed head injuries as my topic.  In addition, her story left me wondering about the therapy techniques that her speech language pathologists used to help her recover.
