John The Apostle of Love
                                 John 1:35-42
I. John is called the "Apostle of Love."
    A. He also known as the "disciple whom Jesus loved."
II. John was a fisherman by trade who worked in the family business.
    A. He and James were the sons of Zebedee and Salome.
III. John wrote five books of the NT.
IV. John became a disciple of the Lord.
    A. We first see John as a disciple of John the baptist (Jn 1:35).
    B. Scholars believe that the other disciple mentioned in Jn 1:35-42 is John.
    C. John left John the baptist to follow Jesus.
V. John was a part of the inner ring (Peter, James & John).
    A. John witnessed the raising of Jairus' daughter (Mk 5:37).
    B. John was present at the transfiguration (Mat 17:1).
    C. John was with Jesus in Gethsemane (Mat 26:37).
VI. John was open with his requests.
    A. John asked about bringing fire down from heaven on the Samaritans (Luke 9).
    B. John asked for a place of honor in Jesus' kingdom.
(Mark 10:35-37 NKJV) Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, "Teacher, we
want You to do for us whatever we ask." {36} And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"
{37} They said to Him, "Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your
    C. John asked when Christ's prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem would come to
        pass (Mk 13:3, 4).
    D. John asked Jesus who would be the traitor (Jn 13:25).
VII. John became an apostle (Lk 6:12-16).
    A. He preaches on Pentecost (Ax 2:14).
    B. John was with Peter at the healing of the lame man (Acts 3&4).
    C. John and Peter were sent to Samaria to impart gifts of the Holy Spirit on new
        converts (Acts 8:14, 15).
    D. John spoken of as "a pillar of the church" (Gal. 2:9).
    E. According to secular sources, John spent the last years of his life preaching in
Ephesus and to the seven churches of Asia.
        1. Christ changed John.
            a. Christ is trying to change us as well (Col 3:9,10; 12-14).
(Col 3:9-10 NKJV) Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
{10} and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him
who created him ...(12-14) Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender
mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; {13} bearing with one another, and
forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so
you also must do. {14} But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
            b. Christians are to be people of love.
                (1) People marveled because John "had been with Jesus" (Ax 4:13).
VIII. John can help us to understand what loving Jesus is all about.
(Mat 4:18-22 NKJV) And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew
his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. {19} Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will
make you fishers of men." {20} They immediately left their nets and followed Him. {21} Going on from there, He saw
two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending
their nets. He called them, {22} and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
    (Luke 5:9-11 NKJV)  For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken;
{10} and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to
Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men." {11} So when they had brought their boats to land, they
    forsook all and followed Him.
    A. Luke 9:23; Mat 6:33 (Time, Talents, Treasures).
(Luke 9:49-50 NKJV) Now John answered and said, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name,
and we forbade him because he does not follow with us." {50} But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him, for he who
is not against us is on our side."
(Mark 9:38-39 NKJV) Now John answered Him, saying, "Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting
out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us." {39} But Jesus said, "Do not forbid
him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me.
(2 Tim 4:2-5 NKJV) Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with
all longsuffering and teaching. {3} For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but
        according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; {4}
and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. {5} But you be watchful in all
things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
(Luke 9:51-56 NKJV) Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly
set His face to go to Jerusalem, {52} and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village
of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. {53} But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to
Jerusalem. {54} And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command
fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" {55} But He turned and rebuked them, and
said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. {56} "For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's
lives but to save them." And they went to another village.
    A. Zeal & Knowledge (Rom 10:1-2).
(John 13:23 NKJV) Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
(John 20:2 NKJV) Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to
them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him."
(John 21:7 NKJV) Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter
heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.
    A. 1 John 1:1-4; Phil 3:7-11
(Luke 22:7-13 NKJV) Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. {8} And He sent
Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat." {9} So they said to Him, "Where do
You want us to prepare?" {10} And He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you
carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. {11} "Then you shall say to the master of the
    house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"' {12}
"Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready." {13} So they went and found it just as He
had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
(1 John 5:2-3 NKJV) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His
commandments. {3} For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments
        are not burdensome.
(John 14:15 NKJV) "If you love Me, keep My commandments.
(2 John 6 NKJV) This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that
as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
(John 13:34-35 NKJV) "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you
also love one another. {35} "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
(1 John 3:14 NKJV) We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who
does not love his brother abides in death.
(1 John 4:7-11 NKJV) Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of
God and knows God. {8} He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. {9} In this the love of God
was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through
Him. {10} In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation
for our sins. {11} Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another ... (4:20-21) If someone
says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen,
how can he love God whom he has not seen? {21} And this commandment we have from Him: that he who
loves God must love his brother also.
(2 John 5 NKJV) And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that
which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.
(John 19:26-27 NKJV) When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He
said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" {27} Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from
that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
(1 John 5:2-3 NKJV) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His
commandments. {3} For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments
        are not burdensome.
    (Mat 7:7-11 NKJV)  "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. {8}
"For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. {9} "Or what
man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? {10} "Or if he asks for a fish, will he
give him a serpent? {11} "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will
your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
(John 16:26-27 NKJV) "In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for
you; {27} "for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from
(Rev 1:9 NKJV) I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of
Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus
(Rev 2:4 NKJV) "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
