Wrong Mate
                                Hebrews 13:1-6
Introduction
I. ILLUS: Little girl was quoting the 10 Commandments - 7th.
    A. "Thou shalt not omit adultery."
        1. It is sad but many live by this misquoted commandment.
II. ILLUS: The 1631 edition of the KJV came to be know as "The Wicked Bible."
    A. When the printers were preparing to print that particular edition, they left a word
out of Exo 20:14 - "NOT."
        1. "Thou shalt commit adultery."
            a. Many today would prefer "The Wicked Bible."
        2. It is a problem of being with the wrong mate!
III. Adultery was a sin in the O.T., and it is sin in the N.T.
(Exo 20:14 NKJV) ""You shall not commit adultery."
(Rom 7:3 NKJV) "So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be
called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no
adulteress, though she has married another man."
(Rom 13:9 NKJV) "For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not
murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and
if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall
    love your neighbor as yourself.""
(1 Cor 5:1 NKJV) "It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and
such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles; that a man has his
father's wife!" [9] "I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral
people." [11] "But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a
brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or
an extortioner; not even to eat with such a person."
(Gal 5:19 NKJV) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication,
    uncleanness, lewdness,"
(James 2:11 NKJV) "For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not
murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a
    transgressor of the law."
IV. It is important that we look at the meaning of a couple words.
    A. Fornication - refers to all illicit sexual matters (married or unmarried).
        1. It is a general word which included all sexual perversions.
    B. Adultery - refers to the voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man or
woman and someone other than his or her mate.
        1. All adultery is fornication, but not all fornication is adultery.
V. The sin of adultery has been a source of countless broken homes.
    A. Read Article
VI. In Heb 13:4, God addresses so many important marital issues.
Discussion
I. MARITAL BEAUTY.
    A. Marriage has its origin with God Himself.
        1. It was God who said, "<It is> not good that man should be alone."
        2. It was God who said, "I will make him a helper comparable to him."
            a. It was God who created the woman for the man (Gen 2:18).
            b. It was God who gave the 1st bride away & joined them together.
        3. It was God who said, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be
joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Gen 2:24).
    B. Marriage was a special creation of God.
(1 Tim 4:3-4 NKJV) "forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods
which (THINGS) God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe
and know the truth. {4} For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused
if it is received with thanksgiving;"
    C. Marriage must be protected.
        1. God has given many laws which are designed to protect the home & family.
        2. But these laws are also for the protection of the individuals & society in general.
        3. When men disregard these laws:
            a. They destroy themselves.
            b. They destroy the home & family.
            c. They destroy society.
            d. And the devastate the church.
        4. One of the great laws of God is: "You shall not commit adultery."
II. MARITAL BLESSINGS.
    A. The undefiled bed is that which God has authorized to be enjoyed by a man & a
woman who are scripturally married to each other.
        1. According to the Bible, the origin of sexuality is God Himself.
(Gen 1:28 NKJV) "Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful
            and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it;
(Prov 5:18-19 NKJV) "Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of
your youth. {19} As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you
at all times; And always be enraptured with her love."
        2. Our generation did not invent sex.
            a. Nor have they produced the divine standard regulating sexual behavior.
    B. The undefiled bed is a gift from God.
        1. Men & women are sexual beings.
            a. There is nothing dirty about divinely authorized sex or ugly about it.
                (Gen 24:67 NKJV)  "Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent;
and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac
was comforted after his mother's death."
    C. The undefiled bed is placed in a particular circle.
        1. God's intention is that there be one man, one woman in one marriage.
            a. Sexual activity is to occur within the circle of marriage behind closed doors.
            b. Within that circle the sexual experience is beautiful, meaningful & fulfilling.
        2. There are at least 2 main reasons for the sexual relationship in the circle of
            marriage.
            a. One is for the propagation of the race.
(Gen 1:28 NKJV) "Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be
                fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it;
                (1) A husband & a wife share with God in the creation of human life.
            b. The second reason is for mutual fulfillment (1 Cor 7:1-5).
        3. Within the circle of marriage, God encourages this intimate love between the
            husband & the wife.
III. MARITAL INFIDELITY.
    A. God has not sanctioned sexual relationships between every man who is a
husband & every woman who is a wife.
        1. Because they may not be each other's spouse.
        2. God doesn't bend His laws for consenting adults.
            a. God said, "You shall not commit adultery."
    B. God condemns all forms of adultery.
        1. There are 3 ways one can commit adultery.
            a. PHYSICAL ADULTERY - This is what King David did.
                (1) ILLUS: About a third (39% of men, 27% of women) of USA TODAY's
readers responding to a USA survey say they've had an extramarital
                     affair.
            b. MENTAL ADULTERY - This is was Jesus was discussing in Mat 5:27-28.
(Mat 5:27-28 NKJV) ""You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You
shall not commit adultery.' {28} "But I say to you that whoever looks at a
woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
            c. LEGALIZED ADULTERY - This is spoken of by Jesus in Mat 19:3-9.
    C. God calls extramarital sex "adultery."
        1. Today it is referred to as "an affair" - but it is still adultery.
        2. You can call a cesspool "lilac water," but it still stinks.
    D. God punishes people who practice unauthorized sex.
        1. This was true before the Law of Moses - Sodom & Gomorrah.
        2. This was true during the Law of Moses.
(Lev 20:10 NKJV) "'The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he
who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress,
shall surely be put to death."
        3. This is true after the Law of Moses - In the Xian age.
            a. In this life people bear the consequences of their sins (Gal 6:7).
            b. In the life to come there will be eternal punishment.
(Gal 5:19-21 NKJV) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are:
adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, {20} idolatry, sorcery, hatred,
contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions,
heresies, {21} envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I
tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who
practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."
(1 Cor 6:9-10 NKJV) "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit
the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters,
nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, {10} nor thieves, nor
covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the
                kingdom of God."
(Rev 21:8 NKJV) ""But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers,
sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the
lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.""
IV. MARITAL FIDELITY.
    A. This verse has to do with purity.
        1. We ought to commit ourselves to sexual purity.
            a. This goes for the unmarried as well as the married.
            b. ILLUS: Josh McDowell has done extensive studies of Xian young people in
                the area of sexual morality.
                (1) He has found that 65% claim they have had some sexual experience
                     before the age of 18.
                (2) 43% pointed out they have had sexual intercourse before the age of
                     18.
                (3) 73% say they receive little or no direction from the church.
        2. We must teach our young people where the moral fences are.
            a. And why they ought to stay within God's guidelines in this matter.
        3. We are now living in an age when the word SEX is associated with words like
            IMMORALITY, VD & AIDS.
            a. It ought to be associated with the beautiful words like marriage, home, love
                & babies.
            b. Now the emphasis is on "safe sex."
                (1) "Safe sex" in the world is disease free & baby free fornication.
                (2) "Safe sex" in the Bible is abstinence until marriage & fidelity after
                     marriage.
Conclusion
I. Marriage is too beautiful & too good to destroy with adultery.
II. And it's never too late to begin a life of purity.
    A. In John 8 - "Go & sin no more."
III. Poem.
Love is given good measure
And honor is a treasure.
Good habits are made strong,
Bad habits dare not last long!
Lessons of life are taught
And understanding is sought.
A broken heart is repaired,
And joy or sorrow is shared.
Everyone tries his best,
To make home a haven of rest.
Father & Mother, together will stay,
And pray, and pray, and pray!
