Looking Back at Iraq
                                Genesis 10:8-12
Introduction
I.  Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible.
II. But, do you know which nation is second?
    A.  It is Iraq! 
        1.  Of course, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. 
    B.  The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia.
        1.  The word Mesopotamia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the
            Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. 
        2.  The name Iraq, mean country with deep roots. 
            a.  Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in
                the Bible. 
III.    The history of the ancient world powers is important.
    A.  Babylon conquered Assyria.
    B.  Persia conquered Babylon.
Discussion
I.  EDEN WAS IN IRAQ (GEN 2:9-14).
    A.  The tree of life was there.
II. ADAM & EVE WERE CREATED IN IRAQ (GEN 2:7-8)
    A.  God planted a garden there.
III.    SATAN MADE HIS FIRST RECORDED APPEARANCE IN IRAQ (GEN 3:1-5).
    A.  The tree of the knowledge of good & evil was there.
IV. THE FIRST SIN WAS COMMITTED IN IRAQ (GEN 3:6-7).
    A.  1 John 2:15-17
V.  NIMROD ESTABLISHED BABYLON & THE TOWER OF BABEL WAS BUILT IN IRAQ
    (GEN 10:8-11 & 11:1-4).
    A.  Babylon and Assyria begin.
VI. THE CONFUSION OF THE LANGUAGES TOOK PLACE IN IRAQ (GEN 11:5-9).
    A.  At one time everyone spoke the language of Iraq
VII.    ABRAHAM CAME FROM A CITY IN IRAQ (GEN 11:31; 15:7; NEH 9:7-9; ACTS 7:2-4).
    A.  Can anything good come out of Iraq?
VIII.   ISAAC'S BRIDE CAME FROM IRAQ (GEN 24:2-4 & 10, 15).
    A.  Abraham sent his servant to Mesopotamia.
IX. THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL SPENT 70 YEARS IN IRAQ (JER 25:11-12; 29:10).
    A.  In 586 B.C. the Kingdom of Judah fell.
X.  THE FIRST WORLD EMPIRE WAS IN IRAQ (DAN 1:1-2 & 2:36-38).
    A.  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace (3:16-18).
XI. THE GREATEST REVIVAL IN HISTORY WAS IN A CITY IN IRAQ (JONAH 1:1-2; 3:1-
    10).
    A.  The gospel was later preached in Babylon (1 Pet 5:12-14).
XII.    THE BOOK OF NAHUM WAS A PROPHECY AGAINST A CITY IN IRAQ (NAH 1:1, 14;
        2:13; 3:19).
    A.   Pride; Cruelty; Selfishness; Lies
Conclusion
I.  Saddam Hussein was an iron-fisted, fanatical dictator who considered himself to be
    the second Nebuchadnezzar and was pouring in massive resources to rebuild the
    ancient empire of Babylon.
