Fulfilling Jesus' Prayer John 17:20-26 Introduction
I. Prayer is a wonderful blessing.
A. Some prayers can only be fulfilled by God.
B. Some prayers can only be fulfilled by others.
II. This is true of Jesus prayer in John 17.
III. Jesus, of course, is praying for unity.
A. Jesus' prayer for unity can only be fulfilled when we are living according to the principles of unity.
B. What are some of the properties of that unity?
I. ONE FAITH (20).
A. Our faith comes through "their" word (Rom 10:17; Ax 6:7; Acts 2:42; 1 Cor 14:37).
B. Our faith is in Jesus (Jn 8:32; 2 Tim 1:12; Jn 14:1).
C. Our faith is common (Jude 3; Eph 4:4-6).
II. ONE FAMILY (SPIRITUAL) (21).
A. Our Father is in heaven (Mat 6:9; 23:9; 2 Cor 6:17-18; Eph 2:19).
B. Our family is the church (Gal 3:26-27; 1 Tim 3:15; Gal 6:10).
C. Our friends are influenced (Acts 2:47; Mat 5:16).
III. ONE FELLOWSHIP (22-23).
A. God enjoys fellowship in heaven (Jn 1:1; 1 Jn 5:7).
B. God expects fellowship in the church (Acts 2:36, 42, 44, 46; 1 Cor 1:10).
C. God extends fellowship to His children (1 Jn 1:1-3, 6-7).
IV. ONE FUTURE (24).
A. Our hope is heaven (1 Thes 5:8-10; Titus 1:2; 3:7).
B. Our hope is in Jesus (1 Tim 1:1; 1 Cor 15:19; 1 Thes 1:3).
C. Our hope is assured by love (Rom 5:5).
V. ONE FOUNDATION (25-26).
A. Knowing the Father (Mat 11:27-30; Jn 8:19).
B. Knowing the Father's love (1 Jn 3:1).
C. Knowing the Father's Son (Phil 3:8-11).
I. Surely, we want to fulfill and live Jesus prayer for Christian unity.
