Running with Winners
1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Introduction

I. We would rather run with winners than with losers (1 Cor. 9:24-27).

II. The Christian life is like a race.

A. We must learn, practice, run, endure, finish.
(Heb 12:1-2 KJV)  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, {2} Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
III. Paul wanted the Christians at Corinth to successfully continue & finish the Christian race.
A. The Corinthians possessed some false notions.
1. They had inalienable right.

2. They were invulnerable.

3. They had superior intelligence.

IV. Paul used Israel's history to teach some valuable lessons.

Discussion

I. ISRAEL'S DELIVERANCE (1 COR. 10:1-4; EXO. 14:13-20).

A. "All our fathers were under the cloud"
B. "All passed through the sea"
C. "All were baptized into Moses in the cloud & in the sea (analogy).
1. They were baptized into Moses; we are baptized into Christ (Gal 3:26-27).
a. Deliverer; leader; lawgiver; mediator.
2. They were baptized in the cloud & the sea; we are baptized in water (Ax 8:35-38).
3. Their baptism marked the end of servitude to Egypt & the beginning of freedom in Moses; our baptism marks the end of our servitude to sin & the beginning of our freedom in Christ (Rom 6:3-4; Ax 2:38; 22:16).

4. Their baptism delivered them from the Kingdom of Egypt; our baptism delivers us from the kingdom of darkness (Col 1:13).

5. Baptism stood between Israel & salvation; baptism stands between sinners & salvation (1 Pet 3:21).

6. Their baptism was an act of faith; our baptism is an act of faith (Mat 16:16).

D. "All ate the same spiritual food"
1. Manna >>> the true manna, Christ & His word (Jn 6:51; 63).
 E. "All drank the same spiritual rock"
1. Ex 17 & Num 20 - Horeb & Kadesh.

2. Christ was the source of all spiritual blessings.

(Eph 1:3 NKJV)  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
II. GOD'S DISPLEASURE (1 COR. 10:5-10).
A. "But with MOST of them God was not well pleased"
1. "Their bodies were scattered in the wilderness" (Num 13 - 10 spies).
(Num 14:16 NKJV)  'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.'
B. They are examples not to follow (Rom 6:23; Gal 6:7).
1. They lusted after evil things (Num 11:31-33).
(Rom 6:12 NKJV)  Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
2. They became idolaters (Ex 32:1-9 > Golden calf).
(Exo 32:4 NKJV) "This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!"

(Col 3:5 NKJV)  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

3. They committed sexual immorality (Num 25:1-6 >> Midianite women, 24,000 died).
(Gal 5:19-21 KJV)  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, {20} Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, {21} Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
4. They tempted the Lord (Num 21:4-5 >> fiery serpents).
(Mat 4:7 NKJV) "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'"
5. They murmured (Exo 16:2 >> Korah, Dathan & Abiram).
(Phil 2:14 KJV)  Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
III. PAUL'S APPLICATION (1 COR. 10:11-12).
A. Remember the object lesson.

B. Remember the warning.

C. Remember the end (2 Cor 5:21).

D. Remember the truth (1 Cor 10:12; 2 Pet 2:20-22).

IV. OUR ASSURANCE (1 COR. 10:13).
A. There is a way of escape.
1. All temptations are common to man.

2. God is faithful.

3. God provides a way of escape.

a. Mat 26:41; 1 Cor 6:18; 10:14; 1 Tim 6:11; 2 Tim 2:22; Js 4:7.
Conclusion

I. We can enter; we can run; we can win the Christian race.

II. But we can do it only with God's help!

III. Are you in the race?
