Marriage: Heaven or Hell

Ephesians 5

Introduction

I. In wedding ceremony - "A little of heaven on earth."

A. For some it is "A lot of hell on earth."

1. Why? - God joined the 2 together, but he wasn't invited to stay.

II. For there to be Heaven in our Homes, Jesus must be Lord of our Lives.

III. It all begins by being "Followers of God" (Eph 5:1).

A. Imitate (Mimic = To copy or imitate closely) (1 Cor 11:1).

Discussion

I. WALK IN LOVE (5:2).

A. Positive.

1. Sacrificing (Agape).
            2. Giving (sacrificing to God - Rom 12:1).

B. Negative (3-4).

1. Fornication - unlawful sexual activity.
            2. Uncleanness - impure, immoral.
            3. Covetousness - greediness.
            4. Filthiness - indecency.
            5. Foolish talking - moronic talk.
            6. Coarse jesting - off-colored jokes.

a. Don't lose you soul (5).
            b. Don't be deceived (6).

II. WALK IN LIGHT.

A. Light is the nature of Christians (8; Mat 5:16; 1 John 1:7).

B. Light bears the fruit of the Spirit (9).

1. (Gal 5:22-23).

C. Light shows what is acceptable (10).

1. (1 Pet 2:5).

D. Light exposes the works of darkness (11-12).

1. (John 1:4-5).

E. Light reveals what is real (13).

1. (John 3:20-21).

F. Light awakens the sleeping (14).

1. (John 8:12).

III. WALK IN WISDOM (5:15).

A. By watching every step.

1. Circumspectly.

(Mat 2:8 NKJV) And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also."

(Luke 1:3 NKJV) it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus,

(Acts 18:25 NKJV) This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John.

(1 Th 5:2 NKJV) For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

B. By redeeming the time (16).

1. (Col 4:5).

C. By understanding the Lord's will (17).

D. By rejecting drunkenness (18a).

1. (Prov 20:1).

E. By being filled (influenced fully) with the Spirit (Col 3:16).

1. A Spirit-filled person has a singing spirit (19).
            2. A Spirit-filled person has a thankful spirit (20).
            3. A Spirit-filled person has a submissive and respectful spirit (21).

a. Wives submit to husbands (22-24). (Titus 2:3-5).
b. Husbands love their wives (25-33).

(1) Going back home.
            (2) My family.          

                        c. Children obey your parents (6:1-4).
                                    d. Servants obey your masters (6:5-8).

(1) If we are not godly at work, we're not going to be godly at home.

Conclusion

I.                   If we want Heaven in our Homes, then Christ must be Lord of our Lives!
