Marriage: But I Say Unto You . . .

Matthew 5:31-32

Introduction

I. "Home is the place where the world of strife is shut out and a world of love is shut in."

A. Home is where the heart is

In dwellings great or small;
And there is many a stately mansion
That isn't home at all;
And a cottage lighted with love-light
Is the dearest home of all.

B. The crown of the home is godliness;

The beauty of the home is order;
The glory of the home is hospitality;
The blessing of the home is contentment.

II. What is this thing called marriage?

A. Marriage is a pledge, an agreement, between a man and a woman to be husband and wife to each other and are thereby joined together by God.

III. Why should we study the subject of marriage?

Discussion

I. BECAUSE OF THE INTRINSIC IMPORTANCE OF MARRIAGE.

A. Marriage is governed by definite laws of God (Psa 128:1; Prov 5:18; Mat 19:8; Rom 7:2).

B. Marriage implies tremendous consequences - good or bad (Song 4:1; Prov 21:9).

C. Marriage is important to children who come as a result of the union.

1. "If they grow up is an atmosphere of love, they themselves will fall in love with love, but if they grow up in an atmosphere of hate, it will tend to mar their personality."

D. Marriage affects the family of both the bride and groom (Gen 24:1-4).

E. Marriage affects the community and the nation (Prov 14:34).

II. BECAUSE OF THE EFFORTS BEING MADE TO DESTROY MARRIAGE.

A. How is marriage being destroyed?

1. By people not believing they must obey God (Rom 1:28-32).

2. By making it easier to obtain a divorce.

3. By lowering the standards of sexual immorality.

a. Dress, music, life (1 Jn 5:17; 1 Cor 6:9-10; Heb 13:4).

III. BECAUSE OF THE PURPOSE OF MARRIAGE.

            A. To provide needed human companionship (Gen 2:20-25).

B. To propagate the human race (Gen 1:28).

C. To develop & nurture an atmosphere of love in which children can be reared (Eph 6:4; Titus 2:3-4).

D. To prevent sexual immorality (1 Cor 7:2-3).

E. To provide individuals with a companion that will mutually help each other develop spiritually (Eph 5:22-32).

IV. BECAUSE MARRIAGE INVOLVES SUCH PROFOUND COMMITMENT.

A. Marriage is for life (Mat 19:3-9; Rom 7:3; 1 Cor 7:15).

V. BECAUSE MARRIAGE IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS.

A. It is God's business (Prov 2:17).

B. It is the church's business (1 Cor 5).

C. It is children's business (Col 3:21).

D. It is the relatives' business.

E. It is the nation's business.

VI. BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS WHICH CAN CAUSE FAILURE.

A. Satan does not want us to have good marriages (1 Pet 5:8).

VII. BECAUSE GOD HAS WRITTEN THE MANUAL ON MARRIAGE (Mat 19:4-6; cf. Gen 2:24).

VIII. BECAUSE THERE ARE DISTORTED VIEWS AS TO HOW TO CHOOSE A COMPANION.

A. Some marry for just: physical attraction, social advantage, financial advantage, escape, or superficial love (1 Cor 13).

IX. BECAUSE GOOD MARRIAGES DON'T JUST HAPPEN.

A. We must lean how to have good marriages.

1. Training & practicing (1 Pet 3:7).

X. BECAUSE OUR SOULS AND MARRIAGES ARE WORTH SAVING (Mat 19:9; 1 Pet 3:7; 1 John 3:15).

Conclusion

I. Let us strive to make our marriages what they should be.

A. "Everyman who is happily married is a successful man even if he has failed in everything else. And everyman whose marriage is a failure is not a successful man even if he has succeeded in everything else.
